Elizabethtown sweeps Messiah

Elizabethtown moved closer to securing the top seed in the upcoming Commonwealth Conference baseball playoffs after sweeping Messiah Saturday afternoon at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium.

The Blue Jays won 11-7 in the opener and 3-1 in the second game.

With the sweep, the two-time defending conference champion Blue Jays (19-9, 8-1) need to win just one of their three games against Albright next weekend to earn the top seed in the conference tournament.

Adam Sheibley led an 16-hit assualt in the first game, going 3-for-4 with a homer and three runs batted in.

In the second game, the Blue Jays turned four double plays in support of sophomore Adam Hartzell (3-0), who had a five-hit complete game.

• Millersville split a doubleheader with host Mansfield Saturday afternoon, falling 13-12 before responding for a 17-13 extra-inning victory. The Marauders won for the 13th time in 15 games and took three of four from Mansfield over the weekend.

The two teams combined for 70 hits in the two games, including 14 home runs and 30 extra-base hits.

Down 13-6 going into the top of the seventh inning in Game 1, the Marauders (19-22, 10-6 PSAC East), pushed across six runs, including a grand slam by left fielder Enrique Arroyo. But they were unable to collect the final hit they needed to keep the game going as a groundout to the third baseman ended their chances.

In Game 2, Millersville had a season-high 23 hits. Every Marauders starter  had at least two hits and scored a run in the game, and all but one drove in a run.  

Cory Phelan finished the day 6-for-10 with two home runs, seven runs batted in and three runs scored. Derek Kline collected six hits in nine at-bats and drove in four runs while scoring two more.

Brett Rhoads (Hempfield) chipped in five hits on the day, including his third home run of the season. Ryan McCormick , Kent Gerdes and Arroyo each had four hits. Catcher Miles Gallagher (McCaskey) and third baseman Cody Wile (Penn Manor) each collected three.

Millersville entered the day tied with West Chester for first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings.

• Johns Hopkins ended Franklin & Marshall's winning streak at eight games with the Jays (27-4, 15-1 CC) sweeping the Diplomats (17-12, 12-4 CC) 10-3 and 12-6 on Saturday.

Hopkins pounded out 27 hits over the 16 innings of baseball, including four home runs, to keep its hold on first place in the Centennial after the battle of the league's only two teams to clinch playoff spots.

Matt Benchener went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored to pace Hopkins in the opener. The Blue Jays also got production from Jon Solomon, who hit a home run and Brian Youchak, who had three hits, scored twice and drove in a run.

Patrick O'Reilly went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Rich Gallugi was 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and a run driven in for F&M.

In the nightcap, Youchak hit two home runs to accompany a triple for the Blue Jays. He went 3-for-5 with seven RBIs.

O'Reilly went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs for the Diplomats.

• Justin Garber (Elizabethtown) went 2-for-3 for his team-leading 26th multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-3, but Shippensburg dropped a key PSAC Western Division doubleheader to division leader California (Pa.), 3-0 and 5-4.

Women's lacrosse:
In the final regular-season showdown between the two undefeated women's lacrosse teams in the Centennial Conference, No. 3 Franklin & Marshall made sure they secured the top seed and home-field advantage in the conference championships for the second consecutive year with a 10-8 victory over No. 4 Gettysburg on Saturday.

F&M (14-1, 9-0) never trailed and strung together three goals late in the second half to take a 10-6 lead that would not relinquish for its seventh consecutive win and fourth straight over Gettysburg.

Meredith Lussier registered four goals, including two on free-position shots, while Jen Pritchard netted a hat trick and dished out an assist for the Diplomats.

The Bullets (15-2, 8-1 CC) got two goals each from Krissy Browning and Lexie Hearn.

• Trailing by three goals at halftime, Lock Haven rallied to score two goals in the final minute of the contest to deal Millersville (6-6, 5-6) its third loss in a row, 14-12, Saturday at Beimesderfer Stadium.

Elizabeth Weekley, fourth in the PSAC in goals per game (4.00), led the Marauders with a game-high six goals. She scored three in the first half as the Marauders built a 7-4 lead.

• Elizabethtown set a program record for goals in a game and clinched a first-round home game in the upcoming MAC playoffs with a 25-8 win at Manhattanville.

Junior Katie Foley scored eight goals to reach the 60-goal plateau for the second straight season and junior Kelsea Kozak dished out four assists to set a new Blue Jay record for career assists with 62, breaking the mark of 59 set by Liz Fretz from 2002 to 2005.

Sophomore Alisha Sangrey (Hempfield) tallied three goals.

Men's lacrosse:
Jimmy Kielek assisted on two man-up goals, before scoring the game winner to cap a 3-0 run late in the fourth quarter and lead No. 4 Washington (12-1, 7-1 CC) to a 12-11 come-back victory over Franklin & Marshall.

The Diplomats (7-5, 3-4 CC) scored five goals in the second quarter to take a 7-5 lead at halftime. Mark Hild had a  hat trick and Bobby Atkins had four points with two goals and two assists.

Softball:
Millersville dropped a doubleheader to visiting West Chester, 2-1 and 5-2.

West Chester (29-16, 8-10 PSAC East) rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth inning in Game 1, then jumped out for a 3-0 lead in the second and held off the Marauders (17-24, 5-15 PSAC East).

• Widener University swept a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader from Elizabethtown (11-16, 5-3), winning a 2-1 and 12-5.

• Franklin & Marshall's Bonnie Crouthamel scattered five hits over seven innings to take a 1-0 pitchers' duel from Swarthmore's Kathryn Riley in the opening game of a doubleheader. The Garnet (20-12, 9-5 CC) won the nightcap, shutting out the Diplomats (8-18, 5-9 CC) 4-0.

Track and field:
Stevens College finished second behind the host team at the Gettysburg Invitational.

Stevens got first-place finishes from Chris McCaffrey in the triple jump (12.63, NJCAA III qualifier), Donald Harrison in the discus (42.98, ECAC qualifier), and the 1,600 relay team of Aaron Schweibinz, Isaiah Bomberger, Kaleb Klosky and Patrick Crawford (3:29.54).

Competing as the Long & Strong Throwers Club, Stevens' Jason McComsey (Lampeter-Strasburg) won the javelin (53.26) and finished third in the discus and fourth in the shot put. Wyatt Brosey (Elizabethtown High) was second in the javelin (51,94).
