Two men, one walking and one driving, were killed in separate accidents Wednesday.
A Lancaster County motorist was killed early Wednesday morning in a head-on collision in Brecknock Township.
According to state police, a 2000 International dump truck driven by 31-year-old Shane Michael Reichard was traveling southbound on Route 897 when it failed to negotiate a curve at the intersection of Willow Street, just north of the Route 222 overpass. The truck crossed the center line and struck a northbound 1994 Chevrolet minivan.
The driver of the minivan, a 73-year old man, was pronounced dead at the scene by Lancaster County deputy coroner James Lynch. The driver's identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Lancaster County coroner Dr. Steve Diamantoni said an autopsy to determine the cause of death is slated for this morning.
A passenger in the minivan, 70-year-old Mildred Witwer of Bowmansville, was taken to Reading Hospital. She suffered major injuries, including collapsed lungs and a broken leg.
Reichard suffered minor abrasions to his head from striking the windshield. Police said he was not wearing a seat belt.
The Adamstown and Reamstown fire companies responded to the scene, along with Fivepointville and Reamstown ambulances and the medic unit from Ephrata Community Hospital.
The road was closed for four hours.
The incident remains under investigation by state police, assisted by Lancaster County assistant district attorney Christine Wilson, who was called to the scene.
• Earlier in the day, 24-year-old Daniel J. Fieni of Lebanon was found lying on the roadway in the 1400 block of West Main Street near Mount Joy Borough.
Northwest Regional Police received a call at 2:30 a.m. of a pedestrian struck on Main Street near Snyder Road, said Chief Sam Gatchell.
Fieni was pronounced dead at the scene by a Lancaster County deputy coroner.
Gatchell said a commercial truck traveling in the westbound lane struck Fieni, who, Gatchell said, "was apparently walking in a traffic lane in dark clothing, and it's not well-lit there."
Police are investigating the accident, but Gatchell told reporters there is "no indication of anything astray."
Police gave no information on the truck or the driver or why Fieni was walking late at night in the rural area.
The dual fatalities are the 15th and 16th traffic-related deaths so far this year, compared to 12 at this time in 2007.
