Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day will be observed Sunday in Lititz, Mayor Russell Pettyjohn announced Tuesday to borough council.

The mayor read a proclamation saying Vietnam veterans played an important role in keeping America free and keeping communism in check.

"When soldiers returned from Vietnam, they were caught up in the debate about the war and never fully recognized for their service," Pettyjohn said.

In honor of 30 or more local Vietnam veterans, Pettyjohn urged people in Lititz to fly the American flag.

Veterans are invited to a dessert social from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Lititz VFW Post No. 1463, 14 N. Spruce St. For more information, call the VFW post at 626-9907.
