A 77-year-old Amish woman died Thursday morning after a sport utility vehicle struck her while she was retrieving mail across the street from her home.
Malinda Stoltzfus, of 3081 Old Philadelphia Pike, Leacock Township, was pronounced dead at the scene by deputy coroner John Wenczyk.
The incident occurred at 6:16 a.m. Stoltzfus was crossing Route 340 to access a mailbox when a Ford Explorer driven eastbound by Daniel B. Strubel, 28, of Lancaster struck her.
According to a news release by state police, the SUV dragged Stoltzfus for 30 feet until coming to rest in the westbound lane. Strubel was traveling at 55 mph at the time of the incident, police said.
Police were assisted at the scene by a Gordonville ambulance and Bird-in-Hand Fire Department.
State police were not available for further comment. It wasn't clear whether the investigation remains open or if charges would be filed.
Stoltzfus was a member of the Old Order Amish Church and was a homemaker. She is survived by four children, 30 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind six sisters and was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
She was the daughter of the late Eli and Elizabeth Lantz King.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday in her home, and Stoltzfus will be buried in Gordonville Cemetery.
Stoltzfus was the third person killed on Lancaster County roads this year. Previously, 18-year-old Keith Michael VanDyke, a Pequea Valley High School senior, was killed Jan. 7 in a motorcycle wreck on Route 30 near Gap, and 23-year-old Carrie Danielle Burns of Mount Joy died Monday in a one-car crash in the 3700 block of Marrietta Pike.
Last year, 61 people died in wrecks on Lancaster County roads, down 1.6 percent from the previous year, according to newspaper records.
