Burglary charges have been filed against two people in the case of an East Earl Township home police say was set afire in October.

No one has been charged with setting the fire, and police said they are still investigating the arson at the home, which was under construction in the first block of Granite Drive.

Joann Vanvolkenberg, 35, and Alexander Marulanda, 28, both of Blue Ball, were charged with burglary, criminal conspiracy and criminal trespass for entering the home without permission on Oct. 24, 2007, East Earl police said.

Statements Vanvolkenberg gave to police place her and Marulanda inside the home when it was on fire; however, authorities have not charged anyone with arson.

The home sustained minor damage from the fire.

According to an affidavit, Marulanda's brother, Danny Marulanda, also was in the home. He wasn't charged with a crime.

According to the affidavit, Vanvolkenberg and Alexander Marulanda told police they wanted to "see the new houses being built." The pair also entered another home under construction, the document states.

The affidavit states Vanvolkenberg told police that Alexander Marulanda brought a candle into the home damaged in the fire so they could see.

She said she went upstairs with Danny Marulanda, according to the affidavit.

She said she was upstairs in the home when she smelled smoke.

She said she went downstairs and saw a fire, and Alexander Marulanda wasn't in the house, according to the document.

In the affidavit, Alexander Marulanda said he received a call from his brother about the fire. Marulanda said he returned to the house with a fire extinguisher and put out the fire.

Vanvolkenberg and Marulanda admitted to police that they entered the home without permission, according to the affidavit.

Blue Ball Fire Company, Pennsylvania State Police and the Lancaster County District Attorney's office assisted in the investigation.
