An 18-year-old Narvon man was killed when his motorcycle slammed into a car along Route 30 in Salisbury Township Monday afternoon.

State police said Keith Michael Vandyke, a senior at Pequea Valley High School, was pronounced dead at Lancaster General Hospital after the 3:20 p.m. crash.

Vandyke was traveling west on Route 30, approaching the intersection with Route 897, when an eastbound Ford Escape driven by 81-year-old Joseph Paparo of Lancaster attempted to turn left across traffic into a gas station, according to state police Trooper James Spencer.

While Paparo and Vandyke avoided a head-on collision, Vandyke's motorcycle clipped the backside of the Ford Escape, throwing Vandyke from the motorcycle, Spencer said.

Vandyke was wearing a full-face helmet at the time of the accident, Spencer said. He was airlifted by helicopter to Lancaster General Hospital.

Spencer said Paparo and a passenger, 78-year-old Anna Paparo of Lancaster, were not hurt in the crash.

How fast Vandyke was traveling and whether any charges will be filed as a result of the wreck are still being determined, police said.

John Bowden, Pequea Valley School District business manager, confirmed Monday night that a student had been killed in a crash but would not release any names.

Bowden said grief counselors will be at the school for students this morning.
