Think you're all done with opening gifts, baking cookies, trimming the tree and watching all those sappy holiday movies? Not so fast!
The Not Ready for Drive Time Players aren't about to let you move on past the holidays quite yet. The holiday season is still here, whether you like it or not.
So, relax and get ready for a little more holiday cheer, more Santa Claus and even more George Bailey and Scrooge from those time-worn Christmas shows. The Not Ready for Drive Time Players present their Winter Radio Theater on Friday at Bube's Brewery.
There are no reservations needed, just $5 and about two hours of your time to make the last farewell to the holiday season you may have loved or loathed.
"We got started on radio in the Harrisburg area and decided to take our radio show to the stage," says Randy Gross of the Not Ready for Drive Time Players.
Actually, there is no stage at Bube's Brewery. The troupe of about a dozen and a half radio personalities will perform their irreverent two-part show in the Alois tavern and adjacent dining room, amidst those attending, making it a semi-interactive comedy theater.
"We go after all the cliches of the holiday too," adds Gross, who issues a warning that this satire of the holidays is meant for those 21 and older. "For one, it's being done in a tavern and for the other, the humor is pretty raunchy."
For example, what if George Bailey really DID throw himself off that bridge and kill himself? What if Scrooge had it right, and only humbugs win in the real world? Most of all, what if you had the chance to tell Santa what you think of him?
The Winter Radio Theater might be compared to Prairie Home Companion with an edge, says Gross, who writes most of the material. He is an advertising copywriter at a Harrisburg agency and former radio writer for stations like WINK-104 and WTPA 93.5.
For the first serving of holiday cheer, the players will present their brand new "Friars Club Roast of Santa Claus," a sketch that will serve as the anchor-piece for a colorful compilation of short off-color spoofs. It's a raucous attack on old St. Nick, with roasters who include the Easter Bunny, the Groundhog, Uncle Sam and Cupid.
Part two of Winter Radio Theater puts together the two most beloved — or most dreaded — holiday stories of all time, "A Christmas Carol" and "It's a Wonderful Life." In "It's a Wonderful Christmas Carol," the cast and crew of the Not Ready for Drive Time Players have revised and improved the show they first did on radio.
"It's a 'What If' tale about Pottersville, so named because ornery old Mr. Potter now rules the town with a Scrooge-like iron fist," says Gross, adding that even Muppets Bert and Ernie pay a visit to Potter.
With its roots in radio, the show is staged the old-fashioned radio way with no props, no costumes and live sound effects. The cast includes local radio personalities, including Gary Barnes, Lenny Bendiksen, Rich Burrill, John Butler, Jim Cook, Dan Craig, Barbara DeCesare, Chad Gibbs, Lauren Gross, Randy Gross, Mike Horn, Todd Matthews, Samuel Ridout, Bill Roddey, Venetia and Eric Weiss.
Conceived and written by Gross, with creative contributions by Cook, DeCesare, Lauren Gross, Ridout and Roddey, this isn't like any for those sweet, sugary holiday shows. After all those Christmas cookies, that might be a good thing.
