A Manheim Township woman was in critical condition Friday night after a horse that escaped from its owner collided with her vehicle in Upper Leacock Township, police said.
Nancy Nonnenmocher was taken to Lancaster General Hospital after suffering head injuries when the horse jumped through the windshield of her four-door sedan, police said.
The accident occurred just after 5 p.m. near the Norfolk Southern train tracks on Creek Hill Road, just east of Horseshoe Road.
East Lampeter Township police said the horse, which belonged to Amos S. Zook Jr. of 98 Hellers Church Road, was running east when it slammed into Nonnenmocher's vehicle in the westbound lane of Creek Hill Road.
East Lampeter police Sgt. Brian Cloonan said Zook was chasing the horse when the collision happened. The horse had escaped from Zook's nearby property.
The horse was killed by the impact, and it was removed from the road by Zook.
"The horse had fallen on top of the hood and the windshield and caved in part of the roof a little bit into the car," Cloonan said.
