Penn State has replaced Arkansas State with Oregon State on next year's home football schedule, strengthening the Nittany Lions' nonconference slate.

The Beavers will visit Beaver Stadium on Sept. 6, 2008, the date the Indians were originally slated to come to Happy Valley, Penn State said Wednesday. The Nittany Lions have never faced Oregon State with the Beavers being the only Pacific-10 Conference team Penn State has never played.

The Beavers finished the regular season 8-4, finishing third in the Pac-10 standings with a 6-3 record. The Beavers won six of their final seven games, including a 38-31 overtime win over No. 17 Oregon, as well as a victory at then-No. 2 California. The Beavers will play Maryland in the Emerald Bowl on Dec. 28.

The Nittany Lions have an all-time record of 22-11 vs. members of the Pac-10, having played Southern California the most of any Pac-10 team (4-4 record). The 2000 Kickoff Classic contest against the Trojans is Penn State's last game against an opponent from the conference. The Lions hosted No. 3 Arizona in the 1999 Pigskin Classic.

Oregon State is the latest opponent to be announced in a series of intersectional games for Coach Joe Paterno's squad against premier programs since the turn of the century. The Nittany Lions completed a two-game series with Notre Dame this year. Syracuse (2008-09) returns to the schedule the next two years, followed by games against Alabama in 2010 and '11 and Virginia (2012-13).

The 2008 Penn State football schedule:

Aug. 30, Coastal Carolina; Sept. 6, Oregon State; Sept. 13, at Syracuse; Sept. 20, Temple; Sept. 27, Illinois; Oct. 4, at Purdue; Oct. 11, at Wisconsin; Oct. 18, Michigan; Oct. 25, at Ohio State; Nov. 1, Open date; Nov. 8, at Iowa; Nov. 15, Indiana; Nov. 22, Michigan State.

Miles hires Billy Joe:
Former Florida A&M coach Billy Joe is taking over at Division II Miles College.

The 67-year-old Joe ranks behind only former Grambling State great Eddie Robinson in victories at historically black colleges with 237 wins in 31 seasons at three schools, most recently Florida A&M.

Joe replaces Wade Streeter, who was fired after seven seasons at the school, which competes in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Miles went 2-9 last season and had to forfeit its five wins the previous year for using an ineligible player.

Joe was fired at Florida A&M in 2005 when the school self-reported 196 rules violations among its 15 men's and women's sports over a seven-year span. An NCAA investigation found no wrongdoing by Joe, and the university later agreed to a $135,000 settlement with the coach.

Joe, who remained in Tallahassee, Fla., during his coaching hiatus, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame Divisional Class in July.

With a 237-108-4 career mark, he ranks fourth all-time in the Football Championship Subdivision in wins. He led FAMU to five Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference titles in 11 seasons, including seven straight playoff trips and a semifinals appearance in 1999.

Southern Miss names Fedora:
Hoping for a boost on offense and at the box office, Southern Mississippi hired Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Larry Fedora as its new coach Wednesday.

Fedora replaces Jeff Bower, who was forced to resign last month after 17 years and 119 wins.

Fedora had been considered a front-runner for the job after he visited the Southern Miss campus last week.

The 45-year-old just completed his third season as the Cowboys' offensive coordinator and has 16 years of college coaching experience, including a stint as Florida's offensive coordinator. This will be his first job as head coach.

Oklahoma State had the nation's seventh-ranked rushing offense at 245.3 yards per game, and overall the offense was ranked ninth.

Fedora was the offensive coordinator at Florida in 2004 and has coached at Air Force, Baylor, Middle Tennessee State and Austin College, where he went to school.

ACC picks Tampa, Charlotte:
The Atlantic Coast Conference championship game is moving after drawing smaller crowds in Jacksonville, Fla., than the league had hoped.

A panel of league athletic directors and faculty athletics representatives voted unanimously Wednesday to move the title game to Tampa, Fla. in 2008 and 2009 and to Charlotte in 2010 and 2011.

Auburn names Franklin:
Auburn hired Troy offensive coordinator Tony Franklin on Wednesday to run the Tigers' offense.

Franklin, who will also coach quarterbacks, spent the past two seasons running a no-huddle, spread offense at Troy. He is also is a former Kentucky offensive coordinator.

Franklin replaces Al Borges, whose resignation was announced on Tuesday, and will at least help coach the offense in the Chick-fil-A Bowl Dec. 31 against Clemson.

Colgate RB arrested:
Star Colgate running back Jordan Scott and a teammate were charged with entering a dorm room and rifling through a desk drawer.

Scott and wide receiver David Morgan were charged Sunday with second-degree burglary and pleaded not guilty at their arraignment Monday. The 20-year-old juniors were released after posting bail and the case was adjourned until Jan. 7.
