Two Lancaster County women were killed late Friday night when their sedan collided head-on with a speeding sport-utility vehicle in Dauphin County, investigators said.
Derry Township police on Sunday identified the women as Crystal Rudy, of Lancaster, and Morgan Long, of Elizabethtown — both 21.
They died at the scene of the fiery two-car crash in the 500 block of Middletown Road, just south of Hummelstown, police said.
Another woman was critically injured in the wreck, according to police.
A Derry Township police spokesman said Sunday the Lancaster County women were traveling home after a night of shopping at The Outlets at Hershey when the crash happened about 10:35 p.m.
Rudy was driving a Ford Escort sedan south on Middletown Road near Gramercy Place in the Hershey Heights development at the time of the collision, investigators said.
An unidentified woman was driving a Ford Explorer north on Middletown Road when her SUV crossed the double yellow line for an unknown reason and collided head-on with the Escort, police said.
The SUV was traveling above the posted 40 mph limit prior to the crash, police said.
After impact, the Explorer rolled over and the driver was ejected before the SUV burst into flames.
The Escort came to rest nearby with Rudy and Long both pinned inside, police said.
Dauphin County Coroner Graham Hetrick pronounced both women dead at the scene of the wreck, police said.
A Penn State University Hospital ambulance transported the SUV driver to Hershey Medical Center. She is in critical condition, police said Sunday night.
She wasn't identified, and police didn't discuss any possible charges.
The spokesman said the site of the fatal wreck isn't known for crashes.
"It doesn't ring a bell as a (location) for a lot of accidents," the spokesman said. "It was basically the conditions of the Explorer speeding and crossing over the yellow line that caused it."
Members of the Dauphin County Accident Reconstruction Team and Hummelstown Borough police assisted Derry Township police at the scene.
Crews from Hershey and Hummelstown fire departments also were called to the scene of the crash.
The crash remains under investigation, and police are trying to locate witnesses. Anyone with information should contact Derry Township police at 534-2202.
