A sport-utility vehicle struck and seriously injured a Lancaster woman who was walking across the first block of North Broad Street shortly before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Stephanie Rudy, 49, of 741 E. Marion St., was thrown 10 to 15 feet after being struck by the SUV, driven by Marion Alonzo Williams, 50, of 112 E. James St.,  Officer Mark Radmore said.

Rudy was admitted to Lancaster General Hospital. An LGH official reported this morning that she was in critical condition.

Rudy was crossing North Broad Street, near Clark  Street, when she was struck at 7:26 p.m.

Williams had been traveling west on East King Street. He had just turned south onto North Broad Street when his Buick SUV struck the pedestrian, Radmore asid.

Rudy reportedly was unconscious when help first arrived, but then regained consciousness. She appeared to have suffered leg injuries, police said.

The accident remains under investigation.

Just before midnight Tuesday, a 22-year-old suburban man led East Lampeter Township police on a chase in the Leola area.

Justin Vega, of the 800 block of Millersville Road, stopped after his Oldsmobile 88 four-door sedan struck fence posts at 35 E. Main St. (Route 23) in Leola, Officer Matthew Hess said.

Vega was traveling at a high rate of speed on Horseshoe Road and drove through a stop sign at Horseshoe Road and Creek Hill Road at 11:58 p.m., Hess said.

The officer activated his emergency lights and siren, but Vega increased his speed. He drove 75 to 80 mph on Horseshoe Road where the speed limit is 35 mph, Hess said.

Vega drove through a stop sign at Glenola Drive and Route 23 in Leola, police said. He lost control after turning onto East Main Street, and the car struck a fence and fence posts, Hess said.

Vega continued driving east before pulling over in the 100 block of East Main Street, Hess said.

Hess said Vega had an odor of alcoholic beverages. He is being charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants, fleeing/eluding police, driving under suspension,  a hit-and-run violation, and stop-sign violations, police said.
