Work on the much-traveled Dillerville Road multispan bridge is on schedule and should be completed as planned in mid-August, officials said Thursday.
Crews placed beams last week and will pour concrete for a bridge deck next Wednesday, PennDOT spokesman Greg Penny said Thursday.
Paving will follow, as will sidewalk and curb reconstruction.
The $7.5 million project, which started April 13, includes replacement of the bridge closest to Manheim Pike and repair of three others along the corridor between Harrisburg and Manheim pikes.
"Things are going very well," Penny said. "We've had good weather, and everything is progressing on schedule. At this point, barring any unforeseen circumstances, we're on target for our original completion date."
Penny said it will take two weeks for the concrete in the deck to set, and then crews will work on the bridge wall.
The stretch of Dillerville Road near Manheim Pike will be graded, then covered with two layers of asphalt — a 5-inch heavy-duty layer and a 2-inch binder layer. Curbing is almost complete on this stretch, Penny said. Work there also includes widening the road and lengthening the left-turn lane onto Manheim Pike.
On the stretch of Dillerville Road near Harrisburg Pike, the three remaining bridges are being stripped and resurfaced, Penny said, and curbs and sidewalks are being installed.
Once the work is complete, the entire span will be paved with blacktop, Penny said.
Contractor for the project is J.D. Eckman Inc. of Atglen.
Deterioration of the 70-year-old bridge was identified during routine inspections, Penny said in a previous article.
The Lititz Pike bridge is next on PennDOT's repair list. Work is scheduled to get under way in 2011, although Penny said previously PennDOT would like to get started earlier because of the bridge's poor condition.
