Starting today, we cut our stock listings in half.
Like every newspaper in the country, we feel the pain of the rising cost of newsprint. Like others, we also wonder how much readership those pages have in this age of the Internet, including our own lancasteronline.com. Many who own stocks have their portfolios set up so that information is only a click away on computer.
I know that some of you, who buy this newspaper, don’t care to do it that way or don’t have a computer. For those readers, we invite your calls and will try to get your favorite stocks and funds listed, as we have done for years.
To get your stock listed, you can contact Judy Strausbaugh, our business editor, at 291-8689, or e-mail jstrausbaugh@lnpnews.com.
To vent, contact me; number and e-mail address at bottom of column.
For newspapers, the challenge today is reinventing ourselves and making more people want to read us, either on paper or on our eEditions. Despite the bad press (never thought I would write that) for the industry, newspapers are strong, still the source of most of the information you receive and (trust me) the most trustworthy.
Take some time as you’re reading this newspaper today to note what you see here that you can’t find anywhere else. It will be a long list.
You don’t even have to list Gil Smart’s exclusive column.
Still puzzled
Many more letters and e-mails have arrived about the Sudoku puzzle, which we run each week on A4, asking us to print it in black and white.
Today, we do that.
You’ve told me that pencil marks don’t show up well on the color, and that the puzzle fills in when you photocopy it.
Many of you wanted a less challenging puzzle. You got it. Starting today, we will feature two puzzles. The new one is rated “very easy,’’ which means I have an outside chance to finish it.
Quote of the month
We run quotes of the week every Sunday, but following is my top quote for January.
Asked why the sale of Conestoga View did not include appraisals for all the buildings on the 39.5-acre property, Commissioner Chairman Dick Shellenberger said:
“I’d like to know why.’’
I don’t know what to say.
Headlines ‘R’ Us
With Rick Gray in city hall and Lynn Swann running for governor, headline writers are having fun.
But once or twice is enough. No more “Swann dives’’ or “shades of Gray.’’
In 1995, I believe I was the first, in a headline, to call the Penn State team that was on its way to the Rose Bowl the “Lion Kings,’’ a takeoff on the “The Lion King’’ movie of the time. The use still pops up in headlines and articles today.
That season, when the Lions won the game that put them in the Rose Bowl, I wrote the headline: “Rose-colored passes.’’
I amuse myself.
Stiller Nation
Daughter Abigail, 10, takes after her mother (a refugee from Pittsburgh) in many ways, including being a fan of the Pirates and Steelers.
Whether the Steelers (pronounced Stillers in the ’Burgh) win or lose, I’m in for a long day.
