Abigail is a 4-year-old spayed female German shepherd and chow mix. She was surrendered when her family had to move and could no longer take care of her. Abigail has lived with cats and dogs previously and enjoys playing with her doggy friends.
Abigail's former family describes her as "very intelligent and obedient." Abigail loves to play "toss and retrieve" with a ball or stuffed toy. She knows "sit" and "shake" and would be a great playmate for children. She is a wonderful, friendly dog, but she needs help finding a new home because of her treatable health issues.
Abigail was diagnosed with diabetes and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency as a puppy. She needs an injection of insulin twice daily, but she tolerates these injections very well, and they are easy to administer.
As a diabetic, she needs to remain on a consistent diet with few treats. Abigail can still have a bright future, as dogs with well-regulated diabetes can have long, otherwise healthy lives. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency results when the pancreas does not produce the necessary enzymes to digest food. It is easily treated with a food supplement. Despite health issues, Abigail is a happy dog who needs a special someone who is willing to go a little further to care for her.
Abigail is available for adoption at Humane League of Lancaster County, 2195 Lincoln Highway East. Shelter hours are noon to 6 p.m. Monday; noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; noon to 5 p.m. Friday; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The shelter is closed Wednesday. From May 28 to June 4, the league received 70 dogs and 174 cats. Twenty-four dogs and 26 cats were adopted; 11 stray dogs and one cat were reclaimed by their owners.
Previously featured pet, Bandit, has been adopted.
