A tractor-trailer collided with a train Friday night at Dart Container in Upper Leacock Township, fire officials said.
Upper Leacock Fire Company Chief Nelson Dagen said the tractor-trailer was crossing railroad tracks that run through Dart Container property, located along Route 23, when it was hit by a Conrail train traveling eastbound.
No one was injured as a result of the accident, which happened at about 6:20 p.m.
Clarence Wenger, Dart facility manager, said the tractor-trailer was carrying disposable food service products such as Styrofoam plates, bowls and cups and was en route to Massachusetts when the incident occurred.
The truck driver declined to comment about the accident. He was a driver for Atkinson AFL Freight Lines, Bethlehem, according to Dagan.
Wenger said the truck driver told him he thought the train was at a standstill when he started to cross the tracks.
"He thought the train was stopped," Wenger said. "He was almost over the tracks when the train hit the trailer."
Plates, cups and bowls were scattered along the tracks because of the accident. But Wenger said most of the cargo was salvaged and loaded onto two trucks.
Wenger said there are two stop signs with flashing lights located on either side of the tracks. He said the lights only flash at dusk or when it is dark, not when a train is approaching.
Wenger said the train makes deliveries to Dart Container and other local companies and travels through the area about four times a day.
Wenger said a similar incident happened about 20 years ago.
"Obviously, were thankful that no one was hurt," Wenger said. "It could have been worse if the tractor part got hit."
East Lampeter Township police are investigating the accident.
