The state is advising consumers to discard raw milk bought at Green Acres Jersey Farm in Lebanon any time after May 8.

The Department of Agriculture warned consumers Friday that routine tests conducted Tuesday at the dairy showed some raw milk samples contained Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, which cause illness when ingested.

The agriculture department has suspended sales at the dairy until samples are free of Listeria.

No illnesses have been reported as a result of the potential contamination, but if illness occurs in those who consumed the milk, they should consult a physician.

Symptoms of listeriosis usually appear four days to three weeks after ingestion and may include fever, muscle aches and gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and diarrhea. If infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms may worsen to include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance or convulsions.

Pregnant women may experience only flu-like symptoms, but infections during pregnancy can cause miscarriage or stillbirth.
