12 students win Steinman fellowships

Twelve students pursuing advanced degrees in mental health fields have been selected as recipients of 2007 fellowships by The John Frederick Steinman Foundation.

The fellowships carry a total value of $54,000 and are named for John F. Steinman, former publisher of Lancaster Newspapers Inc.

This is the 45th year that fellowships have been granted for master's or doctoral level study in psychiatry, psychology and social work.

Winners of grants are traditionally announced in May, which has been designated as Mental Health Month.

Nine of the students are first-time winners of Steinman Fellowships, and three are previous grant winners.

New fellowship winners are:

• Arati Corso-Jones, 26, Lancaster, working toward a master's degree in social work at Temple University. Mrs. Corso-Jones received a bachelor's degree in sociology from Millersville University.

• Ajani Cross, 29, Lancaster, working toward a doctorate in educational & school psychology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Miss Cross graduated from Hampton University with a bachelor's degree in psychology and Millersville University with a master's degree in school psychology.

• Angela M. Keller, 38, Ephrata, working toward a master's degree in social work at Millersville University. Ms. Keller earned a bachelor's degree in social work at Millersville University.

• Ryan M. Kuehner, 29, East Petersburg, working toward a doctorate in clinical psychology at Fielding University. Kuehner received a bachelor's degree in psychology from Bloomsburg University and a master's degree in clinical psychology from Millersville University.

• Janine K. Long, 23, Manheim, working toward a master's degree in clinical counseling & psychology at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Miss Long earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Pittsburgh.

• Meredith E. Moore, 34, Lancaster, working toward a master's degree in social work at Temple University. Mrs. Moore graduated from Florida State University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in music therapy with a psychology minor.

• Meghan R. Sidelnick, 26, Salunga, working toward a master's degree in social work at Millersville University. Mrs. Sidelnick received a bachelor's degree from Millersville University in both social work and psychology.

• Monica Starrett, 46, Lancaster, working toward a master's degree in counseling at Neumann College. Miss Starrett was awarded a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Utah.

• Melissa Ticen, 30, Lancaster, working toward a master's degree in marriage and family counseling at Lancaster Bible College. Mrs. Ticen received a bachelor's degree in Bible/pre-counseling from Baptist Bible College.

The three previous fellowship winners are:

• Edmund P. Garvey, 31, Lancaster, working toward a master's degree in psychology at Millersville University.

• Natalie J. Hetrich, 24, Lancaster, working toward a master's degree and doctorate in counseling psychology at Chestnut Hill College.

• Gabriella M. Wilcox, 32, Columbia, working toward a doctorate in School Psychology at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Including the latest list of recipients, 264 students have received a total of $1,280,840 in study grants since the fellowship program was established in 1963.

In selecting grant recipients, preference is given to those who obligate themselves to practice their profession, for at least the number of years fellowship support is received, in a location serving residents of Lancaster County.
