How would you like to change pennies into dimes?

A man tried that feat twice at a convenience store in Manheim on Sunday, and for awhile he got away with it.

But eventually, Manheim police went looking for 37-year-old David Robert Waltman of New Providence, who is being charged with two misdemeanor counts of theft by deception,

Officer Steve Watson said.

According to police, here is what allegedly happened:

Shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday, Waltman entered the Turkey Hill Minit Market, 101 S. Main St., Manheim. He picked up a tub of butter, priced at $2.69, and handed the clerk a packaged roll of coins stamped "$5 dimes," police said.

The word pennies had been scribbled on the outside of the roll, but that was crossed out, police said.

"The clerk asked him 'are these dimes?' and he said 'yes,' " Watson was told.

The clerk gave the man $2.31 in change for his purchase, and he left the store.

Two minutes later, the man re-entered the Turkey Hill store, picked up another $2.69 container of butter and gave the clerk another alleged $5 roll of dimes, which had the word pennies scribbled out, Watson said. Again he received $2.31 in change.

Some time after the man left the store, the clerk weighed the two rolls. "The weight didn't come up right (for dimes). She opened them and saw both rolls were pennies," Watson said.

The clerk , who is a Manheim woman in her 20s, was somewhat familiar with the man who had shortchanged her, police said.

"She knew him as Dave, and that he stayed off and on with some people in Manheim," Watson said.

On Sunday night police found Waltman, whose address is 10 Kimberly Ave., New Providence, at one of the Manheim locations he frequented. Charges against him are being filed today, Watson said.
