A 56-year-old Elizabethtown man was killed Monday morning when his van collided head-on with a dump truck in Rapho Township, state police said.

Carlton Charran, of 67 Oak Drive, was driving a Chevrolet Express van about 9 a.m. on Route 772 near Route 283 when the collision occurred, police said.

Charran was traveling east when his van crossed the centerline and struck the oncoming dump truck, according to Trooper James Algeo of state police at Ephrata.

Joel C. Scott, 25, of the 800 block of East Main Street, Mount Joy, was driving the dump truck west when the accident occurred about a half-mile west of Esbenshade Road, Algeo said.

Scott was not injured, Algeo said.

Charran failed to negotiate a slight right curve, police said, before his van collided with the Western Star dump truck owned by Kreider and Son of Manheim.

Charran was pronounced dead at the scene by Lancaster County Deputy Coroner John Wanczyk. Investigators said he sustained a severe head injury.

During the investigation, a state police Motor Vehicle Safety Inspection Unit determined the dump truck did not have any violations or defects, Algeo said.

Fire companies from Manheim and Mount Joy assisted at the scene.
