Pequea Valley sophomore Zachary Wilt is a team of one, which everyone essentially is once they hit the water after the starting horn.

Even though he may be outnumbered, Wilt is not outmatched in the pool, where the size of each team does not matter.

His eighth-place finish in the championship finals of the 100-yard freestyle earned him a medal and was the best performance turned in by the handful of athletes from the Lancaster-Lebanon League during the second and final day of Class AA competition in the PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday at Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium.

Going against the fastest kids from around the state, Wilt gave his best effort.

"I felt good. For districts, I didn't shave and I didn't taper, so coming in here I knew I would do better," Wilt said.

"At prelims I did amazing both days compared to what I thought, and because I tapered, I dropped two seconds in my 100 fly and dropped a second in my 100 free."

He had entered the finals of the 100 freestyle as the eighth seed after his time of 48.26 in the morning preliminaries clinched him a spot in the championship heat.

"To get medals in both events was really exciting," added Wilt, whose first medal came as a result of placing eighth in the 100 butterfly Wednesday.

Earlier in the boys' evening session, Donegal sophomore Brandon Smith's time of 47.87 was fast enough to secure first place in the consolation finals, and ninth overall, in the 100 freestyle. He clocked in at 48.47 in the morning.

After earning an eighth-place medal in the 50 freestyle Wednesday night, Smith's performances on such a large stage should provide experience and something to build upon for future meets.

Also, in the morning trials of the 100 freestyle, Annville-Cleona senior Luke Shaheen placed 19th (49.38) while Donegal junior Chad Houck placed 29th (49.84).

In the 100 backstroke prelims, A-C freshman Austin Bohn finished 20th (55.97) and Manheim Central senior Matthew Dietrich finished 31st (57.83).

York Suburban repeated as the Class AA boys' team champion, piling up 221 total points. Springfield Township (138.5), Dover (120), Hershey (118) and Shady Side Academy (114) ended up second through fifth. No L-L schools were counted in the boys' team scoring.

The lone girl participating for the L-L League on day two was Donegal junior Keri Chandler, who finished fifth in the consolation finals, and 13th overall, in the 100 freestyle (53.79).

After the first 50 yards, Chandler was in seventh place, but managed to pass two of her competitors during the final 50.

She was able to qualify for the consolation finals after her time of 54.22 in the trials put her as the 16th quickest.

Oakland Catholic squeaked by Panther Valley for the Class AA girls' team title, totaling 165 points. PV came away in second with 158, while Muhlenberg (142), Springfield Township (135) and Nazareth Academy (121) rounded out the top five. There were no L-L girls' teams which were counted in the team scoring.

Next in the pool will be the Class AAA boys and girls as they kick off their first day of competition this morning at 8 with the preliminary trials of the girls' 200 medley relay.
