An 18-year-old man was killed Wednesday afternoon while riding an all-terrain vehicle in Conoy Township, investigators said.

The man, whom police did not identify, was a passenger on the back of a Honda ATV driven by his 18-year-old male friend prior to the 3:30 p.m. accident, Susquehanna Regional police Sgt. William Roberts said.

The driver was seriously injured in the crash, police said.

The teenagers were riding on the victim's property in the 700 block of Stackstown Road, Roberts said, when the ATV ran into "what appeared to be a big groundhog hole."

The riders were knocked off the ATV and the teenager who died was thrown into a wire fence, Roberts said.

The teenager died after his neck became entangled in the wire, Roberts said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by Lancaster County Deputy Coroner Amanda Shelley.

The driver of the ATV was taken to Hershey Medical Center, Roberts said, and was in stable condition late Wednesday night.

The ATV was capable of reaching speeds near 60 miles per hour, but Roberts said excessive speed did not appear to be a factor in the crash.

Roberts said the investigation is continuing but he does not expect charges to be brought against the driver of the ATV.

Police did not identify the victim, Roberts said, because his father was out of town Wednesday and could not be notified of his son's death.
