Thirty-eight L-L League all-stars -- led by McCaskey head coach Scott Feldman and his staff -- will take on 36 of York's elite senior performers Thanksgiving morning at 10 at West York High School.
"This is a reward for them," said Feldman, who has been coaching at McCaskey for eight years. "We are just having fun."
York's White Rose all-stars, coached this year by West York's Terry Bupp, have won 10 of the 16 all-time meetings. Bupp may be coaching his final game from the sidelines Thursday morning. After 33 years at West York, 24 as head football coach, he is retiring after the school year.
The White Roses have won the past two games, winning 25-14 last year after a 27-24 comeback victory in 2003.
"The kids really have a good time," Bupp said of the cross-county rivalry. "Kids you've played against all of your life are now your teammates."
Unlike regular-season games, Thursday's contest will have defensive modifications. By rule, defenses must line up in the 5-2 formation (except on goal-line and short-yardage situations). No blitzing, stunting or zone pass coverage is allowed.
"They want it to be an all-star game. They want it to be offensive-friendly," Feldman said.
Each team has been allotted a maximum of seven practices, although Feldman admitted the Lancaster team won't be on the field for all seven sessions due to recent weather.
Molding a team and a plan for battle in a week's worth of preparation time is not an easy chore for the coaching staffs, even with such an abundance of talent.
"The easy part is defense because it's dictated for you," Bupp said.
"Offense is the more time-consuming part because you have kids from different systems that have to (form) a cohesive group."
Lancaster's offense will be fueled by speed-burners Kevin Aguilera and Tobias Robinson.
Aguilera, a wideout/defensive back from McCaskey, led the L-L League with 1,368 receiving yards this past season. He caught 64 passes, 12 for touchdowns.
Robinson, a shifty tailback from Cedar Crest, scored 16 total touchdowns this year for the Falcons.
"They are two kids that (York) is going to have to account for. They have the potential to take it yard every time they touch the ball," Feldman said.
Ethan Longenecker, Elco's 6-foot-5 quarterback, will start for Lancaster. Crest's Derek Kline is the backup QB.
Columbia battering ram Joe Williams will start at fullback while Cedar Crest's Ben Weaber will be at tight end.
Along with Aguilera, Manheim Township's Andy Miller will start at wide receiver.
The offensive line consists of tackles Eric Artley (E-town) and Ryan Terry (Garden Spot), guards Dan Smith (Manheim Township) and Chad Miller (Cocalico) and center Jason McHugh (Penn Manor).
Defensively, Tyler Eberly (Cocalico) and Kyle Uibel (Manheim Township) will form the interior of the line while Ceasar Westbrook (McCaskey) and Lebanon blue-chipper Jared Odrick will play end.
"Jared and Ceasar are going to be real hard to defend," Feldman said.
Township's Sam Nana-Sinkum and Chris Hartl will be the starting linebackers.
Nana-Sinkum and Westbrook have been designated as team captains.
The secondary consists of corners Aguilera and Miller and safeties Robinson (free) and Garden Spot's Eric Wisler (strong).
Priority number one for the Lancaster defense will be stopping York's NCAA Division I prospect Matt Marshall. Spring Grove's senior QB has been offered a scholarship to play next fall at Rutgers.
Mississippi, Penn State, Pitt, Syracuse and Toledo are also on the 6-foot-1, 195-pounder's collegiate list.
Quarterbacks Andy McCoy (Susquehannock) and Taylor Green (Red Lion) are behind Marshall on the depth chart.
Included in York's stable of running backs are York High's duo of Shavell Jones and Lamar Hughes.
Bupp projected his starting backfield to include Jones and Dover's Mike Stough. Hughes and Dallastown's Kyle O'Donnell will be first off the bench to spell the starting backs.
Red Lion's Ed Kiser has the ability to be a game-breaker from his wide receiver spot. At 5-11, 150 pounds, Kiser has 4.55-second 40-meter dash speed and could wreak havoc against man-to-man coverage.
